A couple of weeks ago I dug out the sat nav, checked Herbie's oil and set off for Braintree, Essex, for a wedding photography workshop run by Jeff Turnbull. ~(http://www.jeffturnbull.com/). I'd been looking forward to the workshop for ages as Jeff is a fantastic photographer, great trainer and a real nice guy.
Once we'd met up at Jeff's home, introduced ourselves and refuelled with tea and biscuits, we headed off to meet our Bride and Groom models, Amy and Ben.
We spent a few hours at All Saints Church where we had individual time with the Bride and the Groom to take our photographs. We started off taking our pictures outside the church like we would at a real wedding and had time to take photos of Amy in the car and outside the church, as well as photos of Ben outside the church. It was a bright day but was pretty cold and when we moved inside the church it was even colder and I couldn't resist it any more and had to put my gloves on (fingerless ones of course).
In the church we had the opportunity to learn how to capture fantastic images with low level lighting without using a flash - the portrait lens I'd purchased was perfect with it's wide aperture to let in lots of light and create a shallow depth of field (sharp subject, blurry background). Some of the photographers on the course chose to use their flash for some of their shots but I wanted to work as I planned to photograph weddings in the future without flash, with only the available light when possible, resulting in a more natural photograph.
Once we'd finished in the church we took some more shots back outside (much warmer) and then headed back to Jeffs for lunch - or should I say afternoon tea seeing as time had flow and it was 3pm.
After lunch we covered Bridal Prep and Groom Prep photography. On the day of a real wedding these photos will really contribute to capturing the spirit of the day and result in fantastic wedding photographs.
In between capturing the Bride and Groom Prep photos, Jeff kindly took my photo which I'm now proudly using for my blog profile and also on facebook. Being a member of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (http://www.swpp.co.uk), I will soon submit this photo for use as my profile photograph on that site. Thanks Jeff!!
The final part of the day included the business side of being a wedding photographer including marketing, sale and suppliers.
It was a great day, really enjoyable and a great way to try out different techniques for photographing the Bride and Groom. I took some amazing wedding photographs, a few of which I've included below.
